I am an astronomer and who has just recently discovered the delights of pastel painting. I decided finally to paint an astronomical scene, though I freely admit I've long been inspired by the paintings of Casper David Friedrich. This painting was inspired by a Hubble Space Telescope image of a region in the Carina Nebula.
